Ikhala Hosts Wellness Games

 

 

On Saturday, 13th February 2016 the College hosted Buffalo City TVET College (BCC) and Chris Hani District Municipality on a Wellness Programme. The event took place at Dumpy Adams Stadium, KwaMlungisi in Queenstown. The programme aims to encourage the wellness of employees within the institutions.

 

Soccer and Netball were the sporting codes of the day. Ikhala soccer team  won the tournament. They won against BCC and drew against Chris Hani District Municipality. In Netball, Chris Hani District won the tournament. They managed to beat both Ikhala and BCC TVET Colleges. However, Ikhala Netball won a match against Buffalo City TVET College

Ikhala TVET College held its Diploma Ceremony on the 03 September 2015. The event was held at Sikhweyiya Hall, KwaMlungisi in Queenstown. The ceremony was the 1st to be held after the TVET Colleges have migrated to Department of Higher Education and Training. It was embraced by the Director-General, Mr. Qonde. The ceremony was conferred by the College Chairperson Dr Zuma. The ceremony  was a big success.

Alumni Event

The College held its first Alumni Event. The event took place at Aliwal North Campus.  The event covered formers students from Aliwal North and Sterkspruit campuses. The principal of the College Advocate Tom welcomed the students on this event, in his speech he encourage the student to market themselves in the working force. He said the youth of today are facing a different challenges compared to the youth of 1976.

Also invited were the managers of Debonairs, Fish Co and Umtali Lodge. Mr Thys of Umtali Lodge explained to the students the Hospitality Industry. He said dedication is to any job is very important; he said they need to give it all in order to be successful.   Students were also motivated by two former College students who are currently managers at Debonairs and Fish Co.         

This also gave students opportunity to talk to the Career Guidance Officers and the Placement Officer regarding the Placement.

Engineering studies exit workshop - By Zoliswa Tyumbu

 

The College held its exit workshop for Engineering Studies hosted by Student Support Services on 16 July 2016 at Ezibeleni Engineering Campus. The theme of the workshop was “It’s cool to be an artisan, let’s turn every workplace to be a training place”. Manager of Student Support Services: Advocate Mgaleli noted that after students have passed N3 they are allowed to choose to go the artisan route where they have to be trained for such.  The event was meant to equip students with information on opportunities available for them.

 Stakeholders invited were from the following institutions: GWM, Department of Public Works, MERSETA and NYDA and they were each given a chance to make presentations on what their institutions offer. Speakers presented on topics such as Artisan Development, Job Opportunities, Funding, CV (Resume) Development and Entrepreneurship.  Amongst the speakers there was Noluthando Bhunu from Department of Public Works who made a presentation on how she became an artisan. She was once a student and chose to go for training to become an artisan and she now works as a mentor to students at Department of Public Works.
